TLDR

  • Game format is more or less like Fantasy Premier League.
  • Don’t overthink the point system - the points primarily come from goals, assists and clean sheets (and a small add-on for winning games).
  • You get a wildcard after the group stage to change your entire team - so focus your initial draft on the group stages only.
  • You only get 1 free transfers for each round of the group stage - so focus your first draft on 14-15 players likely to actually play (paying for extra transfer is not recommended).
  • Transfer window closes 90 minutes before the first game in the round, however, for the very first game in the EURO (Italy vs. Turkey), you can make changes until kick-off (we’ll be revealing our admin teams in due time before every round starts).

Introduction

EURO 2020 is fast approaching and you can get into the thick of the action by playing FanTeams’ record-breaking £1,000,000 EURO Fantasy Football game. This allows you to select from some of Europe's finest footballers to draft a game-winning squad packed with talent.

It plays like classic Fantasy Premier League except for the fact that you now have the chance to turn your fantasy knowledge into cash prizes - and the best part? You don’t even have to finish first to win!

We’ll do predictions and analysis of all the teams and their key players throughout the tournament to ensure you can play regardless of whether you follow international football or not.

In this article, we’ll explain how you should approach the game and draft your first team (spoiler alert - it’s simple!).

  1. Game Format
  2. Approaching The Game

Game Format

FanTeam’s format and point-system are based on the setup used by the Fantasy Premier League and the official UEFA Fantasy EURO 2020 game. This means you should have no problem converting your knowledge from either and even run similar teams across them.

In case you still need a summary of how it works, we have combined all the most important information below along with a breakdown of how each gameweek will play out.

General

  • You start off with a player budget of 105m and then pick a 15-man squad.
  • You select 11 of them to play before each gameweek - the rest will automatically be benched.
  • You also pick a captain before each gameweek who will score double points along with a vice-captain as back up (in case the captain doesn't play).
  • There are 7 gameweeks in total:

    - 'Group Stages’ (3)

    - ‘Round of 16’ (1)

    - ‘Quarter-finals’ (1)

    - ‘Semi-finals’ (1)

    - ‘Final’ (1)

  • The first deadline of the tournament is just before the kick-off of the first game between Turkey and Italy (June 11th).
  • The other deadlines are 90 minutes prior to the first game of the specific gameweek.

Group Stages

  • You get 1 free transfer per gameweek in the group stages.
  • You can also save that free transfer to use for a later gameweek but never have more than 2 free transfers at a time.
  • Any additional transfers outside of the free ones will cost -4 points .
  • You can have a maximum of 3 players from each team at this stage.

Round of 16

  • Before the round of 16, you’ll get your first and only Wildcard to set you up for the rest of the tournament.
  • The Wildcard allows you to make unlimited transfers throughout a gameweek as long as you stay within the budget.
  • You don’t have to make all your changes in one session when activating your wildcard but can come back later and do more changes as long as you do it before the gameweek deadline.
  • You can have a maximum of 3 players from each team at this stage.

Quarter-finals

  • You get 3 free transfers ahead of the Quarter-finals.
  • You can save 1 of your free transfers for the semi-final if you want to (but only 1).
  • Any additional transfers outside of the free ones will cost 4 points each.
  • You can have a maximum of 4 players from each team at this stage.

Semi-finals

  • You get another 3 free transfers ahead of the Semi-finals.
  • Any additional transfers outside of the free ones will cost 4 points each.
  • You can have a maximum of 7 players from each team at this stage.

Final

  • You don’t get any free transfers for the final.
  • You cannot roll over any free transfers from the semi-finals.
  • You can have a maximum of 7 players from each team at this stage.

Fantasy Points

The point system is based on the one found in the Fantasy Premier League but with a welcomed alternative to their somewhat unpredictable Bonus Point System.

We have made an overview of it below - and if you want a more detailed guide you can check out our Beginner's guide to FanTeam but it’s definitely not a requirement in order to play along as the majority of the points still come from goals, assists, and clean sheets (and a small add on for winning games).

Price Changes

  • A player’s price will change throughout the tournament based on how they perform.
  • The price you see for a player is what it costs to buy them and what you get for selling them (unlike Fantasy Premier League).
  • Price changes will happen every day between 00:00 and 02:00 CET except before the first match.
  • There won’t be any price changes leading up to the ‘Round of 16’ to allow everyone to play their Wildcard.

Budget Changes

  • There could be a budget change before the ‘Round of 16’, the ‘Quarter-finals’, and the ‘Semi-finals’ based on which teams progress the longest (unlike Fantasy Premier League).
  • The logic here is that if only expensive players remain for selection then the overall budget will also have to increase.
  • On a general note, you shouldn’t overthink this.

Chips - and Wildcard

  • The only chip you have to worry about is the Wildcard which has to be used leading up to the ‘Round of 16’.
  • The Wildcard allows you to make unlimited transfers before the round starts.
  • The team you pick using your Wildcard will still have to meet the general rules and stay within budget.
  • You don’t have to make all your Wildcard changes in one session but instead you can come back and finalize it whenever you like as long as you do it before the deadline.
  • You don’t get a free hit, bench boost or a second wildcard for this tournament (unlike Fantasy Premier League).

Approaching the game

Don’t worry if you are still unsure about how to best approach the game at this point - it’s really simple once you get into it.

You have to remember that it’s designed with the intention of making it as easy as possible to play so you can remain focused on what it’s all about - predicting and picking the best players for your team!

With the breakdown of the game format above, we can now start making a plan for how to best approach the game and start planning for our first draft:

  • In order to enter into the tournament, we have to draft a 15-man squad within a budget of 105m and without picking more than 3 players from each team: This means we’ll have to find a balance between picking premium-priced players, differentials and budget enablers to remain competitive.
  • We know that everyone gets a Wildcard ahead of the ‘Round of 16’: This means we should only target the teams we expect to get the most fantasy points throughout the group stages. We can ignore their chances of qualification as we get a free chance to rebuild our team before the knockout stages.
  • We know that we have a late deadline before the first gameweek: This means that we get confirmed lineups for the first game between Turkey and Italy which makes both of them worth targeting from the get-go. It also means we get extra time to gather as much information as possible about the group stages before committing to our first team.
  • We know that we only get 1 free transfers for each round of the group stages and can only save 1 transfer per round as well: This means that the first draft you make should feature players who can return points in all three group games. And as rotation must be expected even during the group stages, your bench should ideally also feature players who you expect to play (even if budget players).

That’s it - these are the principles to keep in mind when first approaching the game and before drafting your first team of the tournament.

We’ll do a team reveal based later and post more content on all of the most relevant teams and players to look out for between now and the start of the tournament - So make sure you stay updated here, follow our social media - and sign up to FanTeam!
