A note on FanTeam Goalkeepers

One thing to note about FanTeam is that goalkeepers receive 0.5 points per save, which can make them a lot more lucrative than in FPL. With the reduction of impact points from 1.0 to 0.3 there’s a lot of positives for selecting a budget goalkeeper given they’re likely to make more saves and won’t be penalised as much when they lose.

Last season the top goalkeepers for saves per appearance that are available this season were:

  • Meslier (4.0)
  • Martinez (3.74)
  • Pope (3.56)
  • Dubravka (3.46)
  • Henderson (3.08)

Meslier was averaging an additional two points per game, then when you add the appearance points that’s a solid four points.

Premium Goalkeepers

E. Santana de Moraes

6.0 M | goalkeeper | Manchester City

Tthere are three goalkeepers priced at 6.0 all with their relative merits, however I believe that this is the best option. He picked up the most clean sheets (CS) last season (19). He’s won the golden glove for the last two seasons and he’s also the only City defender safe from rotation. Furthermore, both Liverpool and Chelsea have defender options that offer far more attacking threat than the City alternatives, which make them more attractive than selecting their goalkeepers. He won’t get many save or bonus points, but he has a relatively high floor.

H. Lloris

5.5 M | goalkeeper | Spurs

The other two goalkeepers at this price are the top performing of the last two seasons and have been over priced accordingly. The new manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, is very defensive and this should lead to more CS for Spurs. Lloris averaged three saves per game last season.

Mid-priced Goalkeepers

D. Henderson

5.0 M | goalkeeper | Manchester United

Has established himself as the number one at United (and probably would have saved a penalty in the Europa League final). United recorded 13 CS last season, he’s an excellent shot stopper (as you can see from the table above) and is 0.5 cheaper than the other nailed defensive starters for United.

J. Pickford

5.0 M | goalkeeper | Everton

Seems to have turned over a new leaf and has impressed for England. Despite their injury problems, Everton still managed 12 CS last season and he averaged 2.90 saves per game. Under Rafa Benitez this is likely to increase.

Budget Goalkeepers

I have detailed more options in this category, as this is where I believe you should be focusing your budget. There is very little value in paying a premium for a goalkeeper given their relatively low upside. The difficult part is finding the budget option that crushes it:

R. Lynch Sanchez

4.5 M | goalkeeper | Brighton

Only started for Brighton from Gameweek 13 last season, but he still managed to pick up 10 CS in 27 games. As a team, Brighton massively underperformed their xGC and I expect improvement this season. They don’t allow the opposition many chances. Furthermore, they have one of the best opening fixture runs of all the teams.

D. Bachmann

4.5 M | goalkeeper | Watford

He’s impressed us in the Euros and there’s a trend where we often get a high scoring goalkeeper from the promoted sides due to the number of saves and bonus points they pick up. Watford have only been away for a season, they retained a lot of their Premier League players when they went down and had the best defensive record in the Championship last season. They only conceded 30 goals and kept 23 CS.

Rotation combination

Reviewing the opening nineteen fixtures, these two sides rotate well and I like the idea of combining the above two (budget permitting).

V. Guaita Panadero

4.5 M | goalkeeper | Crystal Palace

Comes in at a discount, however there’s a lot of uncertainty around Palace with Viera replacing Hodgson and several players out of contract. It’s unclear what their new style of play will be, so I would stay clear for now, but he’s worth keeping an eye on for his proven shot stopping capabilities. In the last two seasons he’s been one of the top goalkeepers with regards to saves made and bonus points.

M. Dúbravka

4.5 M | goalkeeper | Newcastle

I almost cringe at suggesting a Newcastle goalkeeper when they’re likely to be a side that I target with my attacking players, however similar to Guaita he is an excellent shot stopper and when they do pick up a CS, it’s likely that he will be awarded bonus points.
