Background

FanTeam launched in 2013 under the name of Woofbet (World of Online Fantasy Bet) and started out by offering fantasy football contests exclusively.

They rebranded before the start of the 2015 season and are now partnered with Scout Gaming Network who manages the world’s largest liquidity network for fantasy sports which has allowed them to offer even more leagues and sports to their users.

FanTeam’s continued commitment to offering the ultimate fantasy sports experience has seen them become Europe’s leading daily fantasy platform with Football, Basketball, ESports, MMA, Hockey, Baseball, and many more sports on offer.

The services provided by FanTeam can be divided into three major categories:

  • Daily & Season-Long Fantasy Sports
  • Fantasy Matchups
  • Sportsbook

In the following section, we’ll take an in-depth look at each of these three categories and how they work.

Fantasy Sports

Traditionally, fantasy sports is a skill-based game where participants choose from real players in an online selection process, or a draft, to assemble a fantasy team.

The chosen players are then awarded fantasy points based on their performance in real-live games.

The winner is the participant whose fantasy team has accumulated the most points at the end of a season - as also known from platforms like the Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Chances are if you enjoy FPL, you’ll also enjoy FanTeam.

It’s an almost identical way to play, except for the fact that you now have the chance to turn your fantasy knowledge into cash prizes - and the best part? You don’t even have to finish first to win.

Depending on the game mode - both the team with the highest point total and entrants who finish within the top 5-20% are eligible for a portion of the prize money. The higher your team scores, the larger the reward.

FanTeam currently offers two types of fantasy contests with this setup: the traditional season-long editions and the daily ones for those who enjoy fantasy but don’t have time for the season-long commitments.

Season-Long Fantasy

In season-long fantasy, you pick the players you like the best for your team and watch them gain fantasy points based on their performances in real-world games over the course of the season.

An example of this is FanTeam’s €1M season-long Premier League contest which they organized for the 20/21 campaign.

It constitutes all 38 Gameweeks and lasts from September till May giving fantasy managers a chance to transfer players in and out as the season unfolds.

The point system and transfer policies are based on Fantasy Premier League’s which means you can easily convert your fantasy knowledge from managing your FPL team to FanTeam - or vice versa.

Pro Tip
Read on to see how the points system works and compares with FPL.

A record-breaking €1,000,000 worth of leaderboard prizes are on offer for this contest and there are prizes to be won every week and at the end of each month totalling over €3000 to those who have performed the best - and at the end of it all, the champion will pocket €200,000 with the closest other contestants also being paid huge prizes.

FanTeam has also organized season-long contests on other popular football competitions like Champions League, Euros, and the World Cup in the past with substantial prize pools.

Some season-long events are shorter and played in the so-called ‘Freeze’ format where you aren’t allowed to make changes once you have drafted your initial team. This could be competitions such as Wimbledon, US Open, or major Esports events like CS:GO ESL One that usually lasts around a month.

However, whilst season-long fantasy has taken the FPL world by storm - the most popular contests are still the daily ones that last a single day, or run over the course of a weekend.

Daily Fantasy

In daily fantasy, you also play the part of the manager and are given a salary budget that you spend to compose a team of players competing in real-life sporting events.

The difference, however, is that the contests in this setup are conducted on a single day or over a couple of days within one tournament.

An example of this could be a full round of the English Premier League where you draft your team before the weekend and then track it to see how it’s performing and how much you won over the course of that single round.

If you do well you can win huge cash prizes and if you miss out, then you get a chance to redeem yourself the following week.

Pro Tip
For those who play FPL, this setup is very similar to using a ‘Free Hit’ chip every week.

The benefit of daily fantasy sports is that you won’t have to commit to season-long contests where one week of missing out can be crucial to your overall standing.

Instead, you can play whenever you feel like it without worrying about missed deadlines and wasted transfers.

FanTeam offers these daily fantasy tournaments with buy-in as low as €2 and freerolls are often also available for those new to the game and looking to learn the ropes.

You can try out Daily Fantasy for free when you sign up through Drafthound:

Fantasy Matchups

Fantasy Matchups is the latest addition to the FanTeam offering. It’s a new and innovative way to bet on fantasy players, without having to draft a whole team.

You are presented with a line of fantasy ‘player’ matchups - or duels - every week from a variety of sports available on the platform and must then pick your favourite between the two based on who you think will score the most fantasy points.

The two players duelling score points like they would in regular fantasy and in the end, the player who has returned the most points wins the duel.

You must pick a winner in at least 3 matchups with an option to pick as many as 10 which could see you return up to 500 x times your original stake.

Example:

A ‘Fantasy Matchup’ could look like this:

fanteam-matchup-1

And then you’re tasked with picking the player you expect will return the most fantasy points. In this example, Bruno Fernandes has been chosen.

fanteam-matchup-2

You even get the option to combine duels from multiple sports - meaning you can pick between the teams, players, leagues, and sports you know the best when playing the game.

If the player featured in the duel doesn’t start, the duel is declared void. This will remove that specific matchup from your betslip and automatically adjust the payout ratio as well without you having to do anything.

To avoid draws, one of the players in any duel is given a +0.25 fantasy points handicap indicated by a star - in the above example, Salah has been given that handicap.

Pro Tip
If you have a fantasy matchup between two Premier League players you can use the Drafthound Player Compare feature to find the best pick.

Sportsbook

FanTeam also offers the traditional sportsbook service with a variety of leagues on offer and plenty of available betting lines.

However, the one aspect that sets them apart from the other bookmakers is their fantasy points markets which allows you to bet on your favourite athletes.

The two main fantasy points markets are the ‘Top Fantasy Duels’ and the ‘Top Over/Under Fantasy Points’.

Top Fantasy Duel

The ‘Top Fantasy Duel’ market is based on the same gameplay used in the ‘Fantasy Matchup’ game described before.

You get a selection of player duels across different sports and have to pick a winner based on who you think will score the most fantasy points out of the two.

The difference in this setup, however, is that there aren't any rules on how many duels you have to pick in order to compete but instead you get the odds on each player based on how likely they are to outperform their opponent. An example of this can be seen below.

fanteam-matchup-3

In this example, you’re picking between Danny Ings and Raphinha based on who you think will get the most fantasy points - and if you pick the right one your initial stake is returned based on the given odds.

Example
Raphinha won the duel in this example which means an initial stake of €10 backing him would have returned €18.5.

Top Over/Under Fantasy Points

In the ‘Top Over/Under Fantasy Points’ game, you’re tasked with predicting whether a player will score more or less than a fixed fantasy point-threshold set by FanTeam.

The point system is similar to that found on the rest of the platform and associated odds can be found for both over and under as exemplified below.

fanteam-matchup-4

In this example, you’re picking whether Salah will score over or under 8.5 fantasy points in his upcoming game against Sheffield United - and if you pick the right one your initial stake is returned based on the given odds.

Example
Salah scored less than 8.5 fantasy points in this game which means an initial stake of €10 backing the under would have returned €20.3.

Just like traditional betting lines, you can also add these fantasy games to an accumulator in order to boost your odds and potential returns.

If you haven't already, you can use the following offer to get started with a free bet.

Sports & Scoring

With most of FanTeam’s users living in Europe, it should come as no surprise that football is the most popular sport on the platform, with the English Premier and the Champions League boasting the largest prize pools.

We’ve already mentioned FanTeam’s season-long EPL contest with a guaranteed prize pool of €1,000,000 but their most popular contests are still their two weekly daily fantasy competitions.

One with a €20 buy-in and a guaranteed prize pool of up to €100,000 which gives fantasy managers a chance to pocket some nice earnings with as much as €10,000 for the winner. You can check out this week’s competition here:

Fantasy Scoring - Football

FanTeam’s point system differs depending on the individual sport - so ensure you familiarize yourself with the rules and scoring charts before you start playing.

These instructions can be found on the ‘Support’ section of the site but they are also accessible from inside each contest's game lobby.

To give you an example, we’ve added the point system FanTeam uses for football and coupled it with Fantasy Premier League for comparison.

As you can see they overlap on all major parameters whilst also introducing a welcomed alternative to the somewhat unpredictable Bonus Point System found in the FPL.

Similarities & Differences to FPL

As mentioned earlier, anyone with any sort of Fantasy Premier League experience should be able to pick up FanTeam’s contests without issue.

The rules, prices, and scoring systems are all very similar to FPL so both skills and squads are easily transferable.

It’s essentially a version of the FPL that allows its players a legitimate opportunity to make money from their manager expertise.

fanteam-matchup-5

Similarities

  • As in FPL, you are tasked with drafting a squad of 15 players that includes 2 Goalkeepers, 5 Defenders, 5 Midfielders, and 3 Forwards.
  • You can field a maximum of 3 players from a single Premier League team, with the budget for the initial squad also set around 100M.
  • You pick a starting XI each Gameweek from that squad of 15 and organize your bench in case of injuries or rotations.
  • If you play a season-long contest you also get 1 free transfer each week, with each additional transfer costing -4 points.
  • Managers can roll a Gameweek transfer forward but can never have more than 2 free transfers in the bank.
  • FanTeam managers playing season-long contests have 2 Wildcards to use, one for each half of the season. Unlimited free transfers can be used when one of these Wildcards are deployed.
  • You will have to pick both a captain and a vice-captain as a backup every week. The one with the armband will score double points that week.

As you can probably tell by now FanTeam and FPL are largely the same - although there are some minor differences to look out for.

Differences

  • When playing season-long contests player prices rise and fall based on in-game transfers movement and form but, unlike in FPL, a player's sell price is always the same as their buy price.
  • Other than the two aforementioned Wildcards, there aren’t any other chips in FanTeam.
  • Most people don’t know this but you are not permitted more than one team in the FPL whereas FanTeam allows multiple entries.
  • FanTeam has replaced the Bonus Point System with one that adds points based on whether the player is on the pitch when their team is winning or losing.
  • Goalkeepers get +0.5 points for every save made on FanTeam whereas goalkeepers in FPL get one point for every increment of three saves.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or a converted penalty is penalized by -2 points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra +1 point for playing the full match.

That’s it! As most seasoned FanTeam players who also play FPL will tell you these differences will have little to no influence on how you play the game meaning you should have no problem running similar squads on both FPL and FanTeam.

TLDR
FanTeam plays like classic FPL. Meaning you should have no problem running similar teams on both platforms.
