All 20 Premier League teams were playing again over the weekend. Manchester City tightened their grip on the title with a huge win at Anfield while Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United team brought the curtain down on the action with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace. The highest FPL score for the round was 133 points and the average team total was 58. Now, let’s take a closer look at all the action from gameweek 23 and see who were the FPL’s star players.
There was no shortage of goals on Saturday night as Manchester United hosted Everton. The sides drew 3-3 after a pulsating encounter. United’s goalscorers were Edinson Cavani, Bruno Fernandes, and Scott McTominay. The Toffees responded through Abdoulaye Doucouré, James Rodríguez, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was the most ‘transferred in’ United player with over 83,000 teams bringing in the defender after his recent impressive scores. The right-back’s total for the game was 4 points.
The top-scoring United players in FPL terms were McTominay and Cavani who earned 8 points each. Bruno Fernandes scored 7 for the game while Marcus Rashford got 5 points.
Everton’s Calvert-Lewin was the highest-scoring player from this match with 12 points. Doucouré scored 10 points and Rodríguez got 7.
Rodríguez was part of our ‘Differential picks’ and ‘Top picks’ selections at Drafthound for gameweek 23. Calvert-Lewin was also in our ‘Top picks’ selection, as was United’s Fernandes.
Patrick Bamford scored his 12th league goal of the season as Leeds beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Monday night. Jack Harrison had scored an early goal to give the hosts the lead before Bamford sealed the deal with his goal early in the second half.
Bamford seems to be somehow dividing opinion among FPL managers as he was top of both the most ‘transferred in’ and most ‘transferred out’ lists for Leeds players in this round.
Leeds’ Stuart Dallas was the highest-scoring player from this clash with 12 points. Illan Meslier was next on 10 points. Both Dallas and Meslier made it into the FPL’s Kings of the Gameweek teams.
Jack Harrison (9) and Liam Cooper (7) were the next-best Leeds United players. There were five more Leeds players who all scored 6 points each for the game - Luke Ayling, Ezgjan Alioski, Pascal Struijk, Raphinha, and Bamford. Crystal Palace didn’t have any player scoring higher than 2 points.
Manchester City all-but finished Liverpool’s hopes of retaining their Premier League title with an impressive 4-1 win at Anfield on Sunday. It was a pretty even affair up until Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker began making some uncharacteristic errors from the 73rd minute onwards. The Brazil international was at fault for two goals in quick succession, giving possession away to City players far too easily. Alisson, who is owned by 6.3% of teams, scored 0 points for gameweek 23.
Mohamed Salah was the only Liverpool player to earn more than 2 points in this round thanks to the penalty he scored for The Reds. Salah got 7 points for the game.
Almost 400,000 FPL players brought Ilkay Gündogan into their teams after his red-hot recent form. The former Borussia Dortmund player did not let them down. After missing a first-half penalty, Gündogan went from strength-to-strength in the second half scoring two goals and dominating the game from midfield. Gündogan’s FPL total for this round was 13 points. That’s a total of 56 in the last six rounds - an average of 9.33 points per gameweek during that time. Of course, Gündogan was also one of our recommended players in both our ‘Value picks’ and ‘Top picks’ teams.
City’s Phil Foden was another one of our Drafthound ‘Value picks’ and the gifted young star scored a brilliant 16 points after his goalscoring performance. Foden scored City’s fourth goal after having already provided two assists in the game. Foden was the highest-scoring FPL player for the whole gameweek.
Newcastle United made it two wins from three as they beat Southampton 3-2 at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Joe Willock - signed on loan from Arsenal - scored the opening goal for The Magpies before a Miguel Almirón double gave them a much-needed win over Ralph Hasenhüttl’s struggling Southampton side.
Southampton’s new loan signing from Liverpool - Takumi Minamino - bagged a debut goal for himself and James Ward-Prowse scored Southampton’s second.
Almirón earned 15 FPL points meaning he was the second-highest scorer of the week, just one behind Phil Foden. Joe Willock (9) and Allan Saint-Maximin (8) were Newcastle’s other high scorers for the round.
Ward-Prowse (9), Minamino (7), and Che Adams (5) were the pick of the Southampton players.
Chelsea made it three wins in a row under Thomas Tuchel with a 2-1 victory at Sheffield United. They are unbeaten in all four games since he took over. Chelsea also conceded just one goal in those four matches. Mason Mount and Jorginho (penalty) were the goalscorers for The Blues. Jorginho and Timo Werner were Chelsea’s best FPL players on 10 points each for the round.
Fulham’s Kenny Tete and Brighton’s Lewis Dunk both made the Kings of the Gameweek FPL team on 9 points apiece.
That’s all for our review of Gameweek 23. Gameweek 24 takes place this coming weekend and the deadline for transfers and changes is Saturday, February 13th at 11:00 GMT.
